meaning of dream: horrible nightmares

I always seem to have horrible nightmares - last night I woke up screaming, I dreamt that a man who's face was covered in cloth was coming up my stairs holding a maschette - I woke up before anything happened but it really scared me & found it so hard to sleep for the rest of the night.
